There are a lot of people who are very disturbed by what is happening, in and around Brighouse. The whole destruction of the green belt to create something of dubious benefit to Calderdale.
There has been a community on these lands for 1,000 years with 840 dwellings soon to become 2,840, swamped and called a garden suburb. There are many ways of making a protest and for us in Clifton it feels like the Calderdale Council lack sufficient imagination or vision to see that there are better ways to meet their housing target.
I just cannot imagine what traffic congestion will occur if Kirklees and Calderdale succeed in building in this area. The proposition is that 6,000 homes will be built around Brighouse as well as the proposal to build in Bradley.
Infrastructure needs such as schools, healthcare, places of worship, shops and other community buildings, have not been communicated as part of the Local Plan by Calderdale. Calderdale in their local plan have only made vague suggestions that these needs will be met.
They have made promises that a new garden village will deliver new primary and secondary schools that they have no way of guaranteeing.
There is no comprehensive transport strategy in place to support the plan.
Calderdale seem to have made a conscious decision not to consider transport until they have pushed their plans through.
The Calderdale Council Draft Local Plan and preferred strategy will not protect the green belt. Calderdale propose to build huge numbers of houses on green belt land. Their strategy will not protect it.
It is so important that people make their views known to the council by the September 29 or our environment will be ruined forever. leader, Martin, who worked with them throughout their time with us. Thanks also to B&Q, Huddersfield, who supported us with prompt delivery which enabled us to have the materials within a relatively short space of time as required to complete to project.
Thanks to Halfords, Huddersfield, for the donation of unwanted tyres to enable the children to use them for ‘planters’ and also Huddersfield Open Market garden stall, which kindly donated some plants to the children to contribute to our resources.
It could not have been achieved without our own HRI Estates teams for helping with work to secure benches, putting up an archway and the storage of equipment.
The success and enthusiasm that NCS brought along with them in the two week project period is a credit and inspiration and proof that visions can turn into reality with commitment and dedication in a team.
We thank them all.
