Fishing creates a buzz!

-

BRADLEY youngsters have learned to fish at a nearby nature sanctuary.

Nearly 30 children attended the Learn2Fish fishing school at Woodhouse Mill Ponds, which is just off Leeds Road near Deighton.

The fishing school was launched four years ago to give locals the chance to learn how to angle in its lakes.

Youngsters from the Bradley Mills housing estate and pupils from Netherhall Learning Campus, a group of four schools which share the same campus in Bradley Mills, had a turn as part of a week of activities.

Steve Kelly, site manager of Learn2Fish, said: “When the kids started, it took them a bit of getting used to, but soon enough they were all touching the maggots and the fish. That’s how all the inductions go.

“When they left, it looked like they had been intravenously fed with orange smarties and red bull. They were absolutely buzzing.”

The Bradley Mills estate’s residents’ committee Team HD1, which is partially funded by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, runs a week of activities for tenants’ children every summer.

Debi Johnson, a volunteer for Team HD1, said: “We had so much fun this week, but it’s just one week of the year and the kids need more.

“We really need a youth club but we need more funding.”
