Bumper year for annual allotment society show

-

GROWERS in Mirfield proved they knew their onions – and other vegetables too.

Mirfield Allotments and Gardens Society annual show was once again a big success.

The show, held this time at Mirfield Community Centre, saw an array of produce, flowers and homemade bread, jams and chutneys brought before the judges.

One of the most successful growers in the vegetable classes was Fiona Farrar who won all three prizes in the ‘six pods of runner beans’ category.

She also won first prizes for her French beans, plate of six small tomatoes, marrow and cabbage.

Alan Godfrey and Brian Hammond, however, were the men who knew their onions, taking top prizes in three classes.

Carol Thompson proved versatile in her skills taking top prize for her three asters and vase of mixed flowers as well as winning three firsts for her bread and jam.

David Thompson, one of the organisers from the show committee, said: “The show went very well indeed. For us, the new venue worked very well indeed and we were delighted with such a good turnout and 450-plus entries.” Carol Thompson won first prize for her three asters and was also successful in the vase of mixed flowers class and won three firsts for her bread and jam
