on the valve sets were carried out.”

Mr Bamforth said the club monitored the water level and fish regularly as it was their stock and their decision about what to do with the fish during the works. He understood the club sought advice about the possibility of moving the fish but “it was not possible to progress this route’.’

Mr Bamforth said: “Sadly, we assume that the water level dropped more quickly than the club anticipated and the silt build up was many times greater than expected.

“Once there was sign of the fish being in distress and in shallow water the valve sets were closed by Towndoor straight away. Sadly, it appears to have been too late.

“The EA visited the site on Tuesday to inspect and we await a report to confirm their findings in more detail.”

Mr Bamforth said Towndoor invested £750,000 in essential reservoir safety works in 2014 as instructed by the EA to create a new spillway to protect residents in the valley in the event of future floods and storms.

Towndoor continued to invest “a huge sum” in footpaths, tree works and benches to benefit local residents and walkers and “for no financial benefit whatsoever’.’ TWO men have been jailed for more than 25 years for a “truly horrific” sex attack on a woman.

The victim was raped and sexually assaulted by William Kelly after meeting in a bar, before he and Steven Williams took her back to a hotel where she endured more abuse.

Williams, 49, of The Combs, Dewsbury, denied three offences of rape and two of sexual assault following the attack in Blackpool last April, but was convicted after making his victim relive the traumatic attack at trial earlier this year. He was caged for 14 years at Preston Crown Court on Monday.

Co-defendant Kelly, 46, from Blackpool, was given 12 years after pleading guilty to four counts of rape and sexual assault.

The court heard how the 25-year-old woman met Kelly and Williams at a Blackpool bar. Kelly raped and assaulted her before the pair took her back to the room and Williams raped and assaulted her again.

Det Sgt Steve Harry, of Blackpool CID, described both men as “predatory individuals”.

He said: “This was a truly horrific sex attack where a young woman was targeted by Williams and Kelly before being subjected to an appalling ordeal. We welcome the sentences and hope they serve as a warning to others.”
