HUDDERSFIELD’S Fern Beaumont has become British Under 18 Girls Merit champion.

The Paddock Cricket & Bowling Club player, who is Yorkshire champion, defeated fellow Huddersfield Inter-district A team player Sophie Brown in the final at Heswall British Legion Club.

And she staged a remarkable comeback to take the honours 15-14 and make sure the crown stayed in this area following Eleanor Broadley’s success last year.

Twenty girls took part in four groups of five, the top player in each group going through to the semi-finals.

The two finalists were joined by another Huddersfield bowler, Leah Keyworth, as group winners.

In the final, at 14-8, Brown was lying game with a bowl very close to the jack, but Beaumont played that out with a very accurate bowl.

The Yorkshire Champion then scored the next seven points to become the British Crown Green Ladies Junior Champion.

In the semi finals, Brown won 15-8 against the Greater Manchester Junior Champion, Laura Vincent, and Keyworth lost in a very close-fought game 15-14 against fellow Paddock C&BC bowler Beaumont. A strong contingent of Huddersfield bowlers helped Yorkshire win the British Junior County Championship.

Congratulations were due to the whole Yorkshire team, who defeated Warwick & Worcester 415-408 in the showpiece.

The home team won 233-189 at Golcar Liberal Club while the away team went down 219-182 at Ye Olde Knowle.

It was a fantastic result for Yorkshire, who have won the BCGBA title 16 times since 1984 and come runnersup five times.

And Yorkshire have beaten Warwick & Worcester five times in the last 10 years.

This is the White Rose’s third title in a row and their 12th in the last 17 years – a remarkable achievement and testament to all the hard work that goes into making the junior county team so successful.
