Mike, who chairs the Kirklees Skills Group, has spoken at venues including the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees College and opened one of the sessions at Kirklees Business Week. Marina has also spoken to a wide variety of groups motivating them to high achievement by sharing her own experience.
The couple, who live at Halifax Road, Edgerton, will deliver a talk, How to be a Successful Entrepreneur and Lead Your Own Business, in conjunction with the Huddersfieldbased Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce. Mike, who has written a short book on how to be successful in business, said one aim of M&M Training was to help existing businesses get to the next level.
“There’s a lot of information and support around start-ups,” he said. “People who want to grow their own business find it more difficult to get support. In the 1990s, when we were growing our business, there was more support. Business Link would try to find people with the potential to grow and they did that very successfully. They identified potential high-growth businesses and supported them.”
He added: “How does a business increase turnover from £1m to £3m or £5m to £10m? We can help.”
Mike said the secret to expanding a business wasn’t just about funding and raising finance.
“As part of our business journey, we got an offer from a venture capitalist, which we did not take up,” he said. “Putting a plan together to raise money is something we can help with, but we can also help with business strategy, leadership and communicating that strategy to people who may put money into the business. We also invested a lot in training at Direct Visual.”
Said Mike: “If you want to have a bigger business, one of the things you need to do is learn how to do it – to discover the things you don’t know that are preventing you from getting there. You may have the ambition to grow your business, but you have to discover what you need to do to achieve that.”
