steak and ale pie and lamb rump to whet your appetite. However, don’t let the simple nature of the meals fool you – these are the sophisticated older brothers of your typical pub-grub fare. If you’ve got room for dessert after the generous portions, see if you can squeeze in the chocolate tart to finish – you won’t be disappointed. Meanwhile, breakfast is also well catered for, with the eggs benedict a particular favourite. AS well as an extensive wine list and some locally-brewed ales, The Plough also have some fantastic spirits to choose from.

An absolute must-try for any gin lover – whether it’s a special occasion or you’re just looking for an excuse to treat yourself – is The Plough’s signature Gin Flight Entertainment. The offer lets you choose four gins from a wide selection, which are then paired with complementary fruits and tonics. It’s a great way to try some of the more obscure offerings at a great price, and you’ll come away with at least two new favourites. If you’re not sure what to go for, the bar staff know their stuff and are more than happy to offer assistance. AS already mentioned, The Plough Inn is perfectly situated for visits to some of the most spectacular parts of the country, and you’d be hard pressed to fit everything you can do in the area into one trip.

In Kirkby Lonsdale alone there are a myriad of scenic walks to take, including to the famous Ruskin’s View or the Devil’s Bridge, while in the town itself you’ll find plenty of art galleries and some excellent chocolate shops.

While you’re there, it’s also worth visiting the relatively new Royal Barn community beer hall for some casual drinks in a friendly atmosphere.

Meanwhile, whether you’re a rambler, a history buff, an art lover, or you just want to sit in a nice pub by a fire, there’s plenty on offer for Rooms at the Plough range from £85 to 135 per night. There is a seasonal menu of locally produced food. It is about an hour-and-a-half drive from Manchester. For more information, contact 01539 567700 or visit theploughatlupton.co.uk. WHILE it’s possible to get the train and then a bus to The Plough, you’re far better off driving – plus, you’ll appreciate having a car when it comes to visiting the nearby national parks.

Driving is also a lot quicker – it only takes about an hour and a half from Manchester city centre.

Simply make your way on to the M61 via the A6 and the A580, follow the motorway on to the M6 to Cumbria and exit at junction 36.

At the roundabout, take the third exit and continue on the A65 until you reach The Plough on your right.
