Ballcraft Engravers Huddersfield Bowling League There’s still plenty to play for

-

DAVID Fox was the winner of the Huddersfield and District Works League Crown Green Bowls Association singles handicap final.

The event was staged at Lockwood and Salford Conservative Club, and was sponsored by Lockwood Conservative Club.

In the quarter-finals home bowler Carl Taylor from M Taylor Transport had a good win against Ray Whitwam of Mozley Construction 21-15.

Chris Armitage from Quality Butchers playing in his first finals never got going and was beaten 21-7 by an in form Gary Stephens from third division winners Albert Stephens and Son.

Farnley Tyas, teammates Adrian Brown and Danny Curran played each other and Curran won through 21-13.

The final quarter-final match was looking like an easy win for Simon Blyth and Yorkshire County player David Fox.

He had Mozley Construction and Huddersfield Inter-district veteran Frank Greenwood at 16-5,but Greenwood hit back with a brilliant 12 break to lead 17-16.

And with two good bowls to make it 19 Fox took the block for one and the game changed in his favour and he won 21-18.

In the semi-finals Taylor carried on with his fine form from the first game and beat Stephens 21-11.

The second semi-final was a cracker with Curran producing a game saving bowl to tie the game at 20-20.

However, Curran led out a short bowl and Fox capitalised to bowl one 18 inch short which gave him the game and a place in the final.

In the final Taylor raced into a 9-2 lead but Fox kept his nerve and belief, stringing together two good breaks to lead 16-10.

Taylor made a comeback to 14 but Fox got on his favourite mark and ran out a 21-14 winner to take his fourth singles handicap title.

Works league secretary Geoff Martin presented the cup to Fox and the winner thanked Lockwood Con for their sponsorship and greenkeeper Tommy Moseley for producing a great surface to bowl on.

ALTHOUGH many matters are already settled in the Ballcraft Engravers Huddersfield Bowling League, there are still some interesting matters to sort out on the final Saturday this weekend.

Lower Hopton WMC B are already bound for relegation from the Subscription Cup, but its death or glory for Canalside Sports and Lockwood Con B as to who joins them, with only four points presently separating those two.

The Littlewood Cup appears to be the most tightly contested. Milnsbridge BC, Almondbury Lib and Crosland Moor BC B are in a three way fight for the two promotion places with only 1 point difference covering the three of them.

At the bottom Linthwaite C&BC and Thongsbridge C&BC B play each other to decide which goes down and, in fact, a big win for either could even drag Hemplow BC through the trapdoor.

Farnley Tyas BC and Lindley BC, the former with a seven point lead, will be promoted from the Bamforth Cup and who wins the Cup will be settled when they play each other in the last match.

At the bottom of the Ingham Cup, Lockwood Con C and Almondbury Lib B are separated by three points and meet on the last day to decide who goes down with relegated Primrose Hill Lib.
