Walking through the town centre is a chugging hassle

-

The Duke of Kent, Brian Blessed, actor John Pilger, investigative journalist and film-maker, Steve Ovett, former athlete, David Cameron, Prime Minister/leader of the Conservative Party, PJ Harvey, rock singer, Sean Lennon, singer Mark Viduka, former footballer, Nicky Byrne, pop star Chris O’Dowd, actor, AM I the only one who is sick, tired and fed up of being approached in the centre of town by various individuals, wanting you to stop and chat about setting up a direct debit to sponsor a dog, or make a monthly payment to Oxfam, or sponsor a donkey, or a cheetah, or a flippin’ rhinoceros?

It is getting completely out of hand – the last time I went into the town centre I was approached on every street . Here’s how it went: New Street: Do I want a free eye-test? Could I spare a few minutes to look at the leaflet? “No!”

New Street (about 10 yards further on): Have I got a minute for a chat about the work that Oxfam are doing? “No!”

Top of Westgate: Would you like to sign our petition? “No!”

Outside Pack Horse entrance: Which broadband company are you with at the moment? “None of your business pal!”

Walked into Kirkgate shopping centre with the intention of getting a coffee: Would I like to give a donation to children’s cancer? “No!”

Have I heard about the new Sky “Q” box?: “No – it sounds like another way to fill Rupert Murdoch’s bank balance!”

The examples above are on top of the increasing number of homeless people tapping you for “spare change” everywhere you go.

Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking I’m mean or grumpy because I’m not, but I just think something should be done.

Why can’t I just walk down the main street without being approached, intimidated, sold to, etc etc?

Is it any wonder fewer people are visiting the town centres – I will be ordering a new electrical socket, a phone screen protector and some golf balls in the next THE Giants’ dismal season is over.

It’s been a long, hard season performance-wise. What can be done to encourage supporters to buy season tickets for next season?

The board will have to do some hard work.

The two Super League Grand Finalists and other teams are already recruiting well for next season.

To get the Giants into a top four side, the head coach Rick Stone will have to recruit a few quality players for the next Super League season.

Thewlis will have the hardest job of all, in trying to market the Giants season tickets to fund the new players.

Good luck to the board and its entirely up to them.

Hopefully we will see some good promising new signings before next season, hopefully the supporters will return and not have to endure another season of poor performances.

On a positive note, the Giants have left the pitch in perfect condition for the football team.
