Fartown head teacher among award winners

Allegro Optical, which opened its premises in March this year, has appointed optometris­t Claire Wightman.

Claire (pictured) joins the team after 20 years working as an optometris­t in Barnsley. Allegro now has nine employees.

In addition to providing individual eye care locally, Allegro Optical specialise in helping older musicians who are struggling to read their music. Managing director and dispensing optician Sheryl Doe said: “With the business performing so well we took the decision to invite another optometris­t to join our growing team.

Other winners included Janaid Yaqoob, of Bradford-based The Car Empire, which was named Retail Business of the Year and Manni Hussain, chairman of the 88m Group, who won an award for Outstandin­g Contributi­on to Yorkshire. The group has wide ranging interests in commercial property including business centres, self-storage units, “eco” homes, retail outlets and bank properties.

YABA chairman Amarjit Singh said: “It was a privilege to host our fourth annual celebratio­n of Yorkshire’s Asian businesses at this very special evening in Bradford. YABA’s role is to encourage Asian businesses to grow and be part of the wider business community, and these awards are a sign of that.”

YABA has been championin­g regional Asian businesses on a A FUNERAL business in Kirklees has won an award.

Birkenshaw-based Gateway Funeral Services was named best funeral planner in the Yorkshire and East Lancashire region in the 250-plus category at the 2017 Funeral Planner of the Year Awards.

The awards, run by funeral plan provider Golden Charter, were hosted by BBC presenter Dan Walker and held at the Park Plaza London Riverbank Hotel.

Gateway directors Janice Hutton and Richard Arnold were presented with a trophy, a framed certificat­e and a cash prize. In addition, the Woodland Trust has dedicated trees on behalf of Gateway Funeral Services, which will be planted locally in recognitio­n of the company’s achievemen­t. regional, national and internatio­nal level since its formation in 2014. The Asian business community makes a significan­t contributi­on, with a share of over 11% of new business Start-Ups nationally. In addition, according to research published by the CBI, The British Asian community generates around 10% of the country’s GDP despite making up only 6% of the population.
