Silverware is the target for Mellor

-

or top four, there is nothing better than winning and for us the players, for the fans and for the town, I really want us to win some silverware.”

Mellor made an impact in his first season for the Giants, only for the latter part of the season his progress was hampered by injury, and he is expecting the Giants to be very competitive next year.

“We aim to play a brand of rugby next season that will be exciting for the supporters,” said Mellor.

“We have shown that we can be strong on defence, so we will aim to keep the points conceded as low as possible, and when we attack we want to be a good team to watch.”

And Mellor feels that the Giants followers deserve to watch a positive brand of rugby league.

“The fans have been great over the season,” said Mellor.

“Particularly our travelling fans who seem to go for the full 80 minutes without shutting up – which is brilliant.

“When you concede a try it is great to still hear our fans singing – it really picks you up.

“And when you’re winning it is absolutely brilliant to hear them.”

Mellor also paid tribute to the Giants player of the year in 2017 – Sebastine Ikahihifo.

The 26-year-old New Zealand forward was often the Giants inspiration and saviour during the campaign.

“Watching Seb people will know he is a great player, but playing with him you realise just how good he is,” said Mellor.

“It’s the unselfish things that he does, the tackles that he breaks and the tackles that he makes.

“It is the aggression that he brings and Seb is an all-round player and he has got a great future in Super League.”
