Impressive displays by veterans teams
FOLLOWING on from the 8-2 success of the Huddersfield No 3 team win, two other town teams had good results in the second round of matches in the Yorkshire Veterans League.
In Division Three, Clive Standen (3), Mike Belk (2), Keith Skarz (3) plus a Standen and Skarz doubles gave Huddersfield No4 team a comfortable 9-1 win over Wakefield No 2.
Huddersfield No 2 team of Ian McLean, Janet Adams and Neil Crosland went one better with a 10-0 win over Scarborough in Division Two.
In Division One of the Louis France Huddersfield Table Tennis League, Kingsmith Engineering B came back from 4-1and 5-2 down to draw with Greetland thanks to Brian Ruttle, Stefan Arak and Peter Walker each winning their last sets.
Marsh Con A had a comfortable win over their B team with maximum wins for Ian Tweedale, Tony Stead and David Wood, plus a Stead and Wood doubles success.
A strong Woodfield Park A side of Nick Ryder, Darren Lindley and Ian McLean travelled to Scissett WMC A and claimed all the sets thanks to three wins each for the afore-mentioned players and a Ryder and McLean doubles win.
Wilshaw A suffered a rare defeat as their B team of Gary Crossley, Ken Ward and Alan Carter won the final two sets of the match to win 6-4.
The home team had to concede the penultimate set of the match due to Neil Crosland suffering injury in the fourth game.
Ken Ward had an excellent night winning three sets and the doubles with Gary Crossley. Two further singles by Crossley gave the B team the edge over higher ranked clubmates.
Kingsmith Engineering A drew with Deighton Leisure Centre B with league debutant Elaine Wing winning the final set for Deighton.
In Division Two, Deighton Leisure Centre D suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost at home to Kingsmith Engineering D for whom John Longfield and Peter Fox both came away with three wins each.
The Deighton C team had a positive outcome from their match against Kingsmith Fountain Of Youth as maximum wins from Marcus Batkin, Paul Simpson and Samuel Nehmiah helped them to victory.
Paddock’s Liam Fearn and Jonathan Taylor could not be beaten in their match at home to New North Road Baptist Church A.
Kingsmith Engineering C relied on singles and doubles wins by Alex Beresford but two wins each for David Blackburn, Bob Sanderson and Neil Dawson gave Marsh Con C the advantage.
In Woodfield Park B’s match with Kingsmith PW, Janet West and Paul Nutton got off the mark for their respective teams as Kingsmith PW just won by a narrow margin.
In Division Three Geoff Adams also got off the mark for New North Road Baptist Church B as he won a couple of sets in a win over Elland WMC – his last victories were against the same opposition.
In the U3A A versus Deighton Leisure Centre G clash the closest match of the night featured two league newcomers and it was Steve Caulfield of U3A who got the better of Deighton’s Salamat Hussain claiming the last two games and the set.
Deighton Leisure Centre F won three of the last four sets of the match to add some respectability to the score-line as they lost to their E team. Deighton F team’s Sarah Amin won two of her sets, beating Naila Malik and Kayden Oates. This was the first defeat of the season for Oates when playing for the E team.
League newcomers Kingsmith Engineering E registered their first win of the season, at home to U3A B, thanks to maximums from Billy Fisher and Stefano Bartolini. THE Huddersfield team, sponsored by FileDoc Ltd, competed in the second round of matches in the Senior British Table Tennis League at Ormesby Table Tennis Centre.
On Saturday the team of Tim Dyson, Jonathan Heslop, Fraser Riley and Cameron Sandhu got off to the worst possible start.
They were no match for the Hull St Mary’s side and were on the wrong end of a 9-0 score line. Hull fielded a strong line-up including Shaquille Webb-Dixon who is ranked in the top ten at National Under-21 level.
The afternoon session proved more positive as they beat Ormesby No 4 7-2.
Rafal Aleksandrzak replaced Tim Dyson for the two matches played on Sunday. They continued the previous day’s afternoon form by beating Ormesby No 4 and easily accounting for Halton No 4.
