WELSH WONDERS

-

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this is one of Wales’ most famous and, indeed, most impressive castles. It is absolutely stunning, with mighty stone walls rising up out of the hillside overlooking the Irish Sea.

It’s an ideal place to take children, who will love climbing up its steep winding steps and running across the high walls from turret to turret.

Admire its super-thick walls and the ‘dinosaur eggs’ or large stones around the grounds, which were once used as ammunition in battle.

The castle also has a lovely café with a view to match. Take a seat on the balcony if the weather is good, where you can sit marvelling at Snowdonia in the distance while working your way through the more than generous slices of homemade cakes. Their Welsh rarebit is pretty excellent too and they do a hearty daily stew. ■■A family ticket is £19.30, £6.50 for adults, £4.20 for children and under fives go free.
