Steven Kemp 30, Frank Wrathall 26, Jack Dyson 34 FIVE times Huddersfield Billiards champion Matthew Peaker has qualified for the last 16 North stage of this seasons English Amateur Billiards Championship.

The first regional qualifying round was held in Clay Cross in Derbyshire and Peaker was in a group of four, being drawn against Richard Whittle from Widnes, Eddie Duggan from the Wirral and four times Bradford Billiards champion Steven Kershaw.

Peaker knew that Kershaw and Duggan would be match sharp having recently participated in the World Billiards Championships in Leeds at the end of October.

First up for the Huddersfield player was a West Yorkshire derby against Kershaw.

It was Peaker who made the better start and was scoring at regular intervals helped by a couple of breaks in the 40s.

He was always ahead and then stretched his lead even further with back to back breaks of 61 and 48.

A couple of 40 odd breaks from Kershaw cut Peaker’s lead but it was too late for the Bradford man as Peaker ran out winner by 90 points.

Next up was Duggan and Peaker again made the stronger start with three breaks in the 30s from his opening four visits to open up a lead of over 100 points.

He kept up the consistent scoring throughout the match and traded 40 odd breaks with Duggan near the end to help run out winner by over 90 points.

The final match for Peaker was against Whittle and twhe Huddersfield player kept up his run of getting off to the better start as he made breaks of 50 and 45 in his opening three visits and despite a strong fight back from Whittle who made three breaks over 45, it was Peaker who finished stronger and made another couple of breaks in the 40s to help run out winner by 40 points and confirm three wins from three and top the group.

Matthew’s father David was the only other Huddersfield representative.

He was in a group that included Matthew Jackson from Widnes, Tony Cooke and Terry McCadam from Liverpool.

After losing to Jackson, Peaker senior then went down by only 20 points to McCadam but won his final game against Cooke by 30 points to set up a count back of the aggregate points as all three players, Peaker, McCadam and Cooke had all finished on one win each – and McCadam progressed,
