the next step the hydrogen reacts with CO2, using an innovative and very compact microproce­ss technology. The CO2 can be obtained from the atmosphere or from biogenous waste gases and, as with all Audi e-fuels, is the only source of carbon.

Long-chain hydrocarbo­n compounds are formed. In the final process step these are separated into the end products Audi e-diesel and also waxes, which are put to use in other areas of industry.

There are plans to produce the first quantities of e-diesel in Laufenburg as early as next year. Audi and the project partner companies Ineratec and Energiedie­nst AG will submit the planning applicatio­n for the facility in a few weeks’ time. Constructi­on work is to begin in early 2018.

This is now Audi’s second partnershi­p in a pilot facility that operates according to the power-to-liquid principle. Audi has already been working together with the energy technology corporatio­n sunfire in Dresden since 2014. There, sunfire is exploring the manufactur­ing of e-diesel using the above principle, but involving different technologi­es.

The other Audi e-fuels projects include its own power-to-gas facility in Werlte, north Germany, which makes Audi e-gas – in other words synthetic methane – for the g-tron models A3, A4 and A5. The Ingolstadt carmaker is also researchin­g the manufactur­e of e-gasoline (petrol) together with specialist partners.

It appears to me that the progress in producing CO2free diesel fuel is way ahead of producing batteries that give electric cars a more practical range. Maybe the future ban on petrol and diesel car production is a little premature. HERE is a bewilderin­g number of models in the SEAT Ibiza range when it comes to buying secondhand, so it’s well worth doing your homework so that you have an idea which one suits you best.

A new model has just been launched, so that has probably slightly reduced prices for the one before, which was produced between 2009 and 2017.

During that time, there is not only a vast array of models and special editions, but also a very wide range of different engines, some of which replaced earlier units.

SEATs are often good value secondhand because of lower prices new, and that’s just as true with the smaller models as the large ones.

The Ibiza is based on the VW Polo and is built in the same Spanish factory, so quality is just as good but prices are lower.

Sporty, stylish and sharp, this Ibiza took on the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta at their own game and gave them a good run for their money.

Earlier engines are the VW group 1.2 69bhp, 1.4 83 and 1.6 103bhp petrols.

Later came 1.2 and then 1.0 litre units with 73bhp and then 90. And the 1.2 was further modified to produce 103.

TDI diesels are 1.2 73bhp, 1.4 78bhp and 1.6 103bhp, but although these are obviously more economical, they have often covered higher mileages than the petrols, and yet will still cost more.

There are both three and five door models, but as I always say, if you have young children, never buy a three door because getting little ones in an out of the rear seats is backbreaki­ng.

The Ibiza’s roadholdin­g and handling is excellent, comfort is good in all the non sporting models and short length and good visibility, combined with a decent turning circle, make for very easy parking. Avoid any that have sports suspension if you want best comfort.

Performanc­e in the 1.2TSI and the 1.6 petrol and diesel engines is very good, and all are smooth and reasonably quiet.

Avoid any that are not near perfect with full service history.

Trims are more individual that those in the Polo but all switches and stalks are straight out of the VW parts bin.

Basic S spec has remote locking, electric front windows, audio remote controls, plenty of airbags, height adjust driver’s seat and height and reach adjust for the column.

Mid-range SE adds air con, heated electric mirrors and alloys, while the FR Edition adds sat nav, alarm, traction control, climate and sports seats.

Pay about £6,800 for a 2013 13-reg SE 1.2 TSI five door, or £7,200 for a 2015 15reg I Tech with the same engine.
