Sheila grabs headlines with a hole in one!

-

THE Fourball Betterball competition, which splits the second and third rounds of the main event, again went to Examiner Tour ‘newbies’, with first place going to the pairing of Peter Close, from the Ringway Golf Club in Cheshire, and Lynda Grey, from Knaresborough Golf Club.

The competition was played at Antalya GC, over the beautiful Pasha course, where Close and Grey dove-tailed superbly to come home with 40 points, including five nett birdies.

And that was just enough to pip Meltham’s Bob Whiteley and his partner Kim Davies from Sandiway Golf Club with a better back nine.

Their 40-point tally was boosted by a superb five-pointer from Whiteley, who holed his third shot at the 435-metre sixth hole.

However, although she didn’t figure in the prizes, Bingley St Ives’ Sheila Wright provided the day’s main talking point when she fired in a hole-in-one at the par three fifth.

From the Ladies’ red tee, the hole measured 102 metres, so Sheila promptly opted for her driver and bagged a brilliant ace (the second of her career).

The seven-day holiday, staying at the Gloria Verde Hotel, was again organised and arranged by Paul Hanson, from Hanson Travel, in conjunction with former Examiner sports writer Dave Lockwood.

A prize presentation dinner was held at Elland Golf Club. Leading Betterball scores: 1 Peter Close (Ringway) and Lynda Grey (Knaresborough) 40pts; 2 Bob Whiteley (Meltham) and Kim Davies (Sandiway) 40; 3 Nick Wilson (Fixby) and Wendy Smith (Elland) 39.
