Struggling YMCA are beaten on road

-

HUDDERSFIELD YMCA were beaten on their travels as they went down 33-14 at Dinnington.

The defeat led to the Laund Hill club slipping to next to bottom place in North One East.

YMCA made a strong start to the game at Lodge Lane and gained the lead when back row forward Sam Hodge got over the line and Gavin Stead added the conversion.

With man-of-the-match award winner Tom Clough in attacking form, YMCA managed to extend their lead when centre Nathan Chappell touched down and Stead was again on target.

However, for that point on the Sheffield side got into gear and eventually came away with a comfortable home win.

YMCA will look to improve their plight at the foot of the table when they are at home to bottom club Northern.

Old Rishworthians were in good form at home as they won 35-22 against Selby at Copley.

However, Rishworthians were hard pushed to win the Yorkshire One game after letting a 21–0 lead slip away.

Bottom club Selby provided a stiff test, and they came good in the last quarter to register a bonus point win.

After cruising to a three-try lead, the home side were under pressure as the visitors also scored three tries to make it 21–19.

Eventually a fortuitous try earned Rishworthians a bonus point and won them the game.

They opened strongly. Flanker Harvey Keighley-Payne burst through to put teenage centre Sam Nunn, on his return to club, in for a try, converted by Josh Kelly.

They doubled their score when lock Callum Heseltine crashed over in the corner and Kelly converted.

Centre Ben Waud made a great break and passed to supporting lock Fraser Swarbrooke for the third try, converted by Kelly.

Selby started winning more and more possession until, aided by some sloppy tackling, they ran in a converted try.

Just before the break more missed tackles led to a second, unconverted try.

Ahead 21 – 12 at the break, Rishworthians found themselves under constant pressure on the restart, which inevitably led to a converted try.

Kelly brought some relief with a penalty and it was joy minutes later when another penalty attempt hit the post and left wing Anthony Shoesmith pounced on the loose ball to dart over – Kelly converted.

Selby reduced the arrears with a penalty, but Rishworthians got two further penalties which allowed Kelly to put them out of sight.
