Two cash machines pulled from stores

-

BRAZEN thieves targeted cash machines at TWO Huddersfield supermarkets within a couple of hours.

They struck in the early hours of the morning ... and the first police knew of one raid was when the fire alarm had gone off.

Now police have appealed for information about the raids at Aspley and Skelmanthorpe and have revealed details of a car they are anxious to trace.

Both cash machines were abandoned at the crime scenes and it is not clear just how much money was stolen from each one.

The first was at the Asda store on Carr Pit Road off Wakefield Road at Aspley when fire services responded to the alarm going off at around 2am yesterday.

Firefighters who arrived at the store found a cash machine had been pulled from the wall and the alarm had been activated by either an electrical surge or dust getting into the smoke detector. They immediately alerted police. Just two hours later the emergency services were called to the Co-op on Commercial Road in Skelmanthorpe where the ATM had been pulled from inside the store.

The front of the store had been badly damaged, although police said a car hadn’t been used to ram raid the premises.

The machine had been abandoned near the road outside and a getaway car was spotted speeding away.

A Co-op spokesperson said they were working with the police and aiming to re-open the store as soon as possible. Police are now appealing to hear from anyone with information on either raid.

A spokesperson said: “In both instances the cash machines were attacked by suspects at the locations, causing extensive damage.

“In the incident at Skelmanthorpe police are particularly interested about any information about a Black Mazda estate which the suspects drove off from the scene in.

“We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information about either of the incidents to contact the police to assist with their ongoing enquiries.” Huddersfield’s largest privately owned guitar shop Over 300 Guitars, Drums & Keyboards in stock!
