OVE it or hate it, New Year’s Eve is the biggest party of the year, so we may as well go for gold and pop the corks on some fantastic French sparklers.

And whether you’re heading to a black-tie bash, a sequin-filled shindig, a dinner party – or passing on a night out altogether in favour of brunch on New Year’s Day – sometimes nothing but a gorgeous glass of champagne will do.

IF you’re not familiar with this label then it might be reassuring to know it’s the sister house to Salon (a niche champagne which retails for around £435 a bottle), and the champagne of choice in several of London’s most fashionable bars.

A Which? panel of experts awarded Veuve Clicquot a ‘Best Buy’ award and top score in this year’s festive taste test. While it was the most expensive, the panel praised its “rich and opulent style” and noted it was “nicely balanced” and had “good length of flavour”.
