John Ingleby of Moldgreen Lib made breaks of 47 and 26 while Mathew Peaker of Brockholes BC had breaks of 47, 46 and 45.

IN their most recent match in the defence of their Yorkshire Billiards League title, Huddersfield No1 team came up against one of their main title rivals at home against Harrogate – and were narrowly defeated 7-6.

Up first for the Huddersfield side was captain and five times Huddersfield Billiards champion Matthew Peaker, who was up against Harrogate captain Tim Godolphin.

Peaker got in first making breaks of 38 and 35 on his second and third visit to open up a lead of 73-14.

On his next scoring visit, Peaker made a break of 48 which Godolphin replied straight away with 29 to leave the scores at 156-83. Godolphin got in again, but was unfortunate to get a kick when playing a drop cannon and broke down on 27.

The Huddersfield cueman then needed only two further scoring visits to take the opening match 200-117.

The second match was between Jack Dyson and Tom Halliday – the Huddersfield player coming up against an experienced opponent who made a break of 34 on his third visit to open up an early lead at 55-14.

The Harrogate player got in again to make a break of 45 which Dyson followed with a couple of smaller breaks in the 20s, but he had no answer to Halliday who finished the match off in three scoring visits to take the second match 200-126.

With the overall scores stood at 4-4 it was all to play for going into the third and final match between David Peaker and multiple Yorkshire champion and England player, Steve Crosland.

Crosland turned the match around when he made an excellent break of 92 to take the lead for the first time at 142-122.

Crosland, facing a difficult in off the red ball, over hit it and inadvertently the red ball dropped in the middle pocket for a huge slice of luck, he then made the further 24 points he needed to run out a 200-192 in what was one the best matches seen in the Yorkshire League in recent years.

This gave the Harrogate side a narrow 7-6 win but also leaves Huddersfield nicely placed in the defence of their title and still above their rivals at the top of the table.
