part in England’s Ashes this winter as he struggled to regain full fitness.

The 28-year-old returned, however, for the white-ball legs of England’s tour and is also in the squad for next month’s two-Test series against New Zealand.

Assessing Wood’s likely availability for the remainder of a campaign which resumes with the second ODI at Mount Maunganui tomorrow, Morgan said: “It’s not a serious concern at the moment.

“He’s picked up a soreness the last couple of days and he wasn’t worth the risk today.

“We’ll see how he’s assessed over the next 24 hours to see whether he will participate in the next game or we build a plan as to when he can come back.”

South Africa paceman Morne Morkel has announced he will retire from international cricket at the end of the forthcoming Test series against Australia.

The 33-year-old has been a mainstay for the Proteas for more than a decade and has a combined 529 international wickets across all three formats.

He has a chance of becoming only the fifth South African to reach 300 Test wickets in the four-Test series against Australia, having taken 294 scalps at an average of 28.08 in 83 matches.

Morkel said: “It was an extremely tough decision but I feel the time is right to start a new chapter.

“I have a young family and a foreign wife, and the current demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain us. I have to put them first and this decision will only benefit us going forward.”

Morkel has no intention of quitting altogether, as he added: “I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in me and I am excited for what lies ahead.”

Somerset all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the county until the end of the 2019 season.

The 33-year-old, who has represented South Africa and the Netherlands at international level, began his second spell with Somerset in 2016.

Durham have signed South Africa opener Aiden Markram for the beginning of the county season and appointed New Zealand batsman Tom Latham as their captain in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
