What’s happening to historical sites is tragic

-

WHEN Kirklees’ historic sites are all cemented over by planners and developers, all we’ll have left are houses and fast food shops - and only memories in our minds of what made our area famous. It’s a tragedy.

What do developers care as most of them will have to consult the map of actually where we are and our history will mean nothing to them.

Robin Hood, the Brontes, the famous factories that made our town great are just pulled down for profit-making ventures.

Take a good look at the All Our Yesterdays photographs in the Examiner and what is standing now will become merely a reminder.

In a way we are betraying our ancestors’ greatness and what of our future generations asking why our heritage is destroyed for the sake of misplaced developments? landmark Castle Hill could be given a facelift in the form of some sort of building up there.

The hill arouses much passion one way or the other so a public debate should take place with the faces of what is proposed up there.

Years have gone by since the old pub was removed and many are calling for some sort of replacement.

The Jubilee tower has seen many changes in our town but is it fitting to change the landscape up there?

It is a landmark seen from many miles in every direction.

Of course, any change up there would mean an increase in traffic.

Almondbury increase now and at times is very busy. Castle Hill in summer and good weather days is popular.

If change is coming, how much is needed? I AM not sure Remains understand what Parliamentary democracy is.

Our MPs derive their legitimacy and power only from being elected by us, the people.

The word democracy, derived from the Greek, means “rule of the people”. In the UK, ultimately, sovereignty resides with the people.

Parliamentary into power by us, then gave us back the choice: Remain in the EU or Leave the EU.

We, the people, chose Leave under the conditions set by Parliament.

Yes, the result is divisive but so are all referendums and elections: that is their purpose.

A new referendum to choose either the EU’s punishment deal or the existing WTO deal is probably worthwhile.

But we cannot have a second in/out referendum.

To do so would undermine the foundation of all subsequent referendum and even election results.

Remain MPs and Remain civil servants are making a serious error that will come back to haunt them.

They are meant to be working to get us completely out of the EU, not second-guessing the electorate.

It is very damaging to democratic consent - if they won’t listen to us, why should we listen to their second referendum or anything else?
