YORKSHIRE Billiards League title-holders Huddersfield No1 have moved a couple of steps closer to retaining their crown.

They faced a double-header against their own second team and won both matches – the first 9-4 and the second 7-6.

In the first frame of the first match clash, five times Huddersfield Billiards champion Matthew Peaker was up against Jez Ford.

Peaker got in first, making some useful runs to open up a 68-38 lead.

Peaker then made a break of 44 which Ford followed straight away with a 35 break of his own to take the scores onto 112-73 – but it was Peaker who ran out the winner 200-120.

The second match was between Scott Lawton and Brian Cousen and it was Cousen who made the better start and opened up a lead at 60-36.

Cousen increased his lead to at 160-148 without making any sizeable breaks.

Cousen then needed three more scoring visits to take the second match by 200-165.

The overall scores stood at 6-3 in favour of No1, and in the final match between David Peaker and John Ingleby the score stood level at 42-42.

Peaker took a lead of 80-56 and ran out a 200-118 winner – securing maximum points for the No1 team with a 9-4 away win.

In the return match at Brockholes BC it was a similar story for the No1 side.

Matthew Peaker was on first against Ford and made back-toback breaks of 43 and 42 to open up an early lead of 90-18.

Ford responded with a 30 break but Peaker replied and made a break of 54 to lead 144-48. A further five scoring visits saw Peaker take the opening game 200-86.

The second match was again between Cousen and Lawton and it was Cousen who made the stronger start, helped by a 30 break to lead 65-25.

Lawton hit back with a run of 31 to close the deficit to 114-98 and there was never more than eight points between the two players until Lawton made another smaller contribution to lead 161-140 and, from there on, he never looked back and ran out the winner by 200-164.

The scores were at 5-3 in favour of the No1 team going into the final match between David Peaker and Martin Wood.

Wood won 200-190 for a final result of a 7-6 home win for the No1 side to leave them top of the table.
