Rangers gave a debut to back row forward Will Broadbent-Allan off the bench.

Matty Byatt started for the first time at front row while Mikey Holmes returned to the seventeen.

Jordan Williams and Nathan Robinson were both unavailable and made way in the match day squad for Homes and BroadbentAllan. Rangers’ cause wasn’t helped by losing Aussie back row forward Joey Bobbin after just ten minutes, and he was struggling with the affects of a heavy cold.

West Hull started the game in great style and opened the scoring after just four minutes as full back Rich Wilkinson joined the line and ran through unopposed after an Underbank defensive misread on the right side.

Prop forward Ryan Wilson slotted over the two and he did so again on 11 minutes after back rower Raymond Brown forced his way over.

This followed a comedic play as Rangers had four chances to secure a bobbling ball, but simply allowed West Hull to regain possession and restart the tackle count. Rangers were bossing the middle of the park, but couldn’t convert their excellent build-up play into points, and defensively they were being kept on the toes by the clever half back play from Hull’s Callum Windley and Scott Spaven.

However, Underbank finally registered some points if a little fortuitously in the 24 minute. Half back Luke Pogson launched a midfield bomb that didn’t travel as far as intended.

Centre Owen Restall caught the ball and kept it alive as he found powerful Courtney Allette with the pass.

Allette galloped 20 metres before finding Pogson on his inside and the half back did the rest outpacing the cover to score.

Pogson couldn’t add the extras to his try, but Rangers were back in the game at 4-12.
