MEMORIES OF THE ZETLAND

-

UDDERSFIELD had two pubs named The Zetland 50 years ago. The Zetland Hotel on Queensgate still exists, but the Zetland Arms, on Queen Street South, that was once the Amsterdam Bar, is now student accommodation and known as Zetland House. The response was swift when I asked readers if the famous Amsterdam Bar, of the 1970s and 80s, had previously been called the Zetland. Marlene Kelly’s parents, Frank and Lily Pearson, took the pub in 1960 when it was the Zetland Arms. “A Buffalo Lodge used to meet there every Monday evening. My two sisters and I worked behind the bar for my parents. After they left, it closed down and the BYB brewery sold it.” Sandra Tremaine is part of the same family and says the Pearsons moved to the Zetland from the Southgate pub, which was demolished for road widening. Barbara Moorhouse lived in Primrose Hill and would call at the pub when it was run by Mr Menton to meet his daughters, Myra, Audrey and Claire, and go with them to Milton Congregational Church. Angela Mellor says the Huddersfield Trade Directory of 1924 shows the pub was run by J W Broadbent. Long time reader Irene from Newsome also confirmed it was once the Zetland, as did old Examiner colleague Andrew England. He pointed out the name Zetland is carved in stone over the lintel of one door and on another lintel is the year 1852. WHERE does the Queen keep her chickens? Royal ‘Enfield. And wait, there’s more. What do you get if you cross a cricket bat with baked beans? Wind in the willows.
