Burgess ruled out for season
SCISSETT CE Academy are the inaugural Partner School for Huddersfield Giants Community.
It marks the launch of the Community’s new School Partnership Programme (with a Double Gold Partnership Package).
Head of Sport, Jonathan Timms, and Sports Partnership Manager Rachael Lakey are at the forefront of engaging schools to achieve their sporting and PE goals.
With over a third of children leaving primary school overweight or obese according to Public Health England, the programme couldn’t have come at a more poignant time.
Huddersfield Giants Community delivers PE lessons, healthy eating programs and literacy/numeracy intervention, as well as after-school activities.
Although the programme is primarily aimed at pupils, WIGAN’S England winger Joe Burgess will miss the rest of the season after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last week’s win at Widnes.
Burgess, 23, was injured after landing awkwardly when challenging for the ball in the air and scans have confirmed the worst fears of Warriors coach Shaun Wane.
“I’m gutted for Joe because I know how hard he has worked to get to the level he is at,” Wane said.
“His last three games have been his best of the year and he was playing really well.
“Joe is one of the best wingers in the competition and he will be back stronger than ever I’m sure.
“Joe is obviously very disappointed but is determined to get back as soon as possible. This is where our welfare programme really comes into its own and we will guide Joe through.” Huddersfield Giants Community are keen to build a positive two-way relationship with staff and teachers.
There is a benefit scheme for partner schools.
Timms said: “The program allows us to utilise our branding and PE expertise to positively impact young people within our communities.
“Our vision is that no young person leaves high school obese and that everyone in our community confidently engages in sport and physical activity, thus leading healthy, active lives.
“We have worked in partnership with Scissett CE Academy for many years now and I am delighted that the school saw such benefit from our work that they not only signed up for our Gold Partnership Package, but actually doubled the package. We will work together thorughout the academic year.” ■■Huddersfield have won their last three meetings with Widnes.
