THE Colne Valley Federation team are up and running in their pursuit of the Division 1 title as they opened their 2018 campaign with a 19-13 victory against old rivals Wallasey.

Crosland Moor played host to the Valley’s home team as they registered nine winners, including an impressive plus-73 aggregate victory.

Stand-out performances came from Jack Dyson (Thongsbridge) with a 21-12 success in a high quality game with Les Henderson, and Danny Teale (Kirkheaton Con) who delivered a man-of-the-match display in his 21-9 success against Wallasey’s Colin Saville.

The away team, meanwhile, stuck well to their task at a tricky Higher Tranmere green as they registered four winners and limited the home team to just 24 chalks on the aggregate.

Notable performances came from Liam Fallas in a 21-17 win against James Fitzpatrick and the evergreen Andy Cairns, who registered a sweep winning 21-7 win over John Devlin.

Next up for the Colne Valley are close rivals Barnsley in what is sure to be a keenly-fought contest.

EARLY league tables in the Ballcraft Engravers Huddersfield Bowling League show champions Thongsbridge BC neck and neck at the top of the Subscription Cup standings with Crosland Moor BC.

Could this be the year when Thongsbridge’s colours are lowered a little on the mast?

More could become clear when the two have their first scheduled meeting on the Lower Hopton WMC green on June 9.

By coincidence, these two finalists in the Yorkshire Cup last season also meet in the second round on June 2 at Springwood BC.

Elsewhere, Meltham BC appear to be making the necessary effort to get back to the top flight at the first attempt, and are the only unbeaten team in the Drayton Cup.

Golcar Lib and Linthwaite Hall lead the Littlewood Cup, but with Cleckheaton Sports and Lindley BC both hot on their Colne Valley heels with a game in hand.

Elland CA&BC and Linthwaite C&BC share the Bamforth Cup lead but Meltham BC B and Paddock I&C are chasing strongly, the latter with a game in hand.

The Ingham Cup looks to be really competitive with any number of teams possibly involved, while Slaithwaite C&BC B have made a strong start in the Beaumont Cup – but with Kirkheaton C&BC and Grange Moor BC chasing hard for the one promotion place in that Cup.

The Binns and Taylor Cups are only just into their seasons and it’s too early to draw any clear conclusions, but Waterloo BC B have made a cracking start in the Binns, while three or four clubs are looking interested in the Taylor.
