Rhys makes name for himself

-

ANOTHER Beaumont from Broad Oak is in the winner’s circle!

Freda and Fern are well known on the Huddersfield and county bowling circuit, but now Rhys has made a name for himself by winning the Jack Burgin Trophy at Lockwood Con.

Beaumont – whose grandmother and sister have grabbed plenty of headlines – took home the £80 first prize sponsored by the hosts with a 21-17 win over George Turton of Lindley BC.

The 22-year-old Beaumont, however, had to work hard for his first major success because in the first round, by Graham Woodruff, and in the semi-finals, by Colin Noble, he was taken all the way to 20.

But he saved his best performance for the final and was delighted not only to win the trophy and book a place in the Champion of Champions final, but also to make his own part of family history.

“I’m always being called Fern’s brother, but now I can finally put my name to something,” smiled Beaumont, who works as a technical operator at Thornton & Ross.

“Right from the start I had to scrape through, because it was nip and tuck right to the end against Graham.

“It was quite close against Robert Craven as well until I found a mark over the crown and finished it off quite quickly.

“Then, in the semi-final I was well down, something like 17-10, but I managed to pull it back right at the end and was glad to get through, it was a great feeling to go to the final.”

The Subscription Cup player, who started bowling at 10 when he inherited his grandad’s woods from grandma Freda, was determined not to end up in such trouble in the final.

“I definitely found my best form in the final and came out like a house on fire really,” he explained.

“Even then George fought back, but I’d built up a big enough lead to see it through, so I was over the moon to finally get it won.”

Beaumont, who will be 23 in a couple of weeks, intends to put his name down for a few more competitions.

“The Champion of Champions is something to look forward to and I will give it my best shot,” he added. “Hopefully I can push on from this and see what else I can win this year.”

Sponsored by Dennis Hawes of the host club and Michael Stout, Hesling took the title 21-17 against clubmate and best mate Sophie McCaffrey.

Last year’s winner, Lucy Stephens (Broad Oak), fell at the semi-final stage against Hesling, 21-9.

In her semi-final, McCaffrey beat Charlie Evans of Marsh Lib 21-19.

Evans had a tremendous game against Yorkshire County Junior Leah Keyworth (Broad Oak), in the quarter-finals, just prevailing with a 21-19 win.

There was some excellent bowling in the final.

Both players beat good bowls on a regular basis.

And playing the game in a very sporting way, as best friends do!

But at 17 across, Hesling played two very good bowls which McCaffrey couldn’t match.

Another pair at the last end sealed victory for Hesling to claim her first junior title in her last year of junior bowling.

Junior President Michael Haigh presented the trophy and did his badge proud by providing sausage sandwiches free of charge all through at Springwood.

Junior secretary Geoff Martin thanked the sponsors, referees, players and spectators for their support. Megan Beresford (Marsh Lib) 21 April RushworthRobinson (Broad Oak) 9.
