Ponting gets key role
JAMES Sutherland is to stand down as the chief executive of Cricket Australia (CA).
The 52-year-old has served in the role since 2001 and said it had been a “privilege and honour” to have held the position after joining as general manager in 1998.
Sutherland, a former first-class cricketer with Victoria, has given CA 12 months’ notice of his decision, which comes two months after Darren Lehmann left as national coach in the wake of a ball-tampering scandal. ......................................................... Sutherland said: “After nearly 20 years at Cricket Australia, the time is right. I feel very comfortable that this is the right time for me and a good time for the game.”
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting will join the team’s coaching staff for their one-day international tour of England.
Ponting will assist former teammate and new Australia head coach Justin Langer for the fivematch series which starts on June 13.
Langer said: “Ricky is one of the greats of the game.
“And since he was already in England doing some commentary we saw it as a great opportunity to have him join our team for this important series.
“Ricky’s knowledge of the game is second-to-none, and we know that his experiences, tactical expertise and leadership will be invaluable for this group as we start to build a team capable of winning a World Cup in these conditions in a year’s time.”
