Kirkburton’s Ben Carrington hit a fine 62 for the Joe Lumb Cup team while Will Reeves (inset) claimed four for 42 against York HUDDERSFIELD’S Joe Lumb Cup team turned in an excellent team performance to beat York by 152 runs at Broad Oak in their final group game.

The elite Under 17 team and manager Roger Peaker will now have to wait until the end of the month, however, when the other group games are completed, before learning whether they have qualified to challenge in the knockouts for the trophy.

The one thing they had to do to have a chance was beat York - and that they did superbly.

Batting first, skipper Tom Addy of Almondbury Wesleyan (28) and Josh Megson from Skelmanthorpe (21) put on 48 for the first wicket.

When they had gone, Ben Carrington (Kirkburton) took charge of the innings with a well compiled 62, going to his 50 in 88 balls and hitting nine fours and a six during his 102-ball stay.

When he was out, after sharing partnerships with Musa Ahmed from Hall Bower (11), Will Reeves from Thongsbridge (13) and Charlie Auty of Skelmanthorpe (48), Huddersfield were on 199.

Hall Bower’s Tom Baxter then saw things through with a fine unbeaten 60 off just 36 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes and with Owen Kenworthy (Honley) contributing 17 not out, the total rose to 282-6 and York knew they were up against it.

That was especially so when Huddersfield achieved a run out without York having scored and, when spinner Will Reeves took the second wicket with 52 on the board, the home side quickly asserted their authority.

York fell to 87 for seven and then 130 all out as Reeves finished with four for 42 from 13 excellent overs, Ahmed three for 30 from an equally impressive 14 and Isaac Eustance wrapped things up with two for 16.

Defeated York still have two group games to play, against Barnsley and Bradford, who have yet to win a game. Only when those games have been completed will Huddersfield know their fate.
