Village hall work almost completed

-

MAJOR repairs to the roof at Brockholes Village Hall are almost complete ... even though thieves tried to disrupt it.

The vital work costing £20,000, which is repairing the whole of the extensive south elevation of the main building, was necessary when it was found that stone slates were loose and a number had fallen close to the entrance.

An attempted theft of roof slates at the rear of the hall in April was thwarted and, as a result, CCTV and further security features have been installed.

The work was carried out after grants were secured and fundraising by Brockholes Village Trust, which owns and manages the building.

The hall, listed as a building of architectural and historic interest and previously the village school, was converted to its present use after 1979 when the Trust, a charitable organisation was established.

Trust chairman David Wyles said: “The hall is very well used during school term by Brocks, a before and after school club, every weekday evening and at weekends with various classes and private functions.”

Grants were obtained from the National Lottery Big Lottery Fund, the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation and Holme Valley Parish Council. The Trust also raised more than £8,000. David added: “Had the money not been forthcoming we would have been in danger of having to close the hall.”

The work has been carried out by Brockholes Roofing and GMC Roofing, and is expected to be completed by the end of the month. PRICE INCLUDES: • Return flights from Liverpool, Manchester or
