“READING is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” said English poet and playwright Joseph Addison.And while curling up with a good book may not be the first thing you or children think to do this summer, it’s undoubtedl­y one of the most rewarding hobbies you can take up. If you do decide to start a new chapter and get your, or your child’s, brain in shape this summer, Friends of Honley Library should be your first stop. readers’ group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 10.30am. The group reads a new book every month and discusses it over tea and biscuits. New members are always welcome. Call at the library for a copy of the current book.

Evening Book Group - For those who can’t (or don’t) do mornings, the evening group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7pm.

Story time for under fives - Every Friday in term time between 2.30pm and 3pm.The session is a combined story and rhyme time and the activity will be determined by the ages of the children who attend.All children must be accompanie­d by an adult. be amazed at what mischief a piece of paper can get up to after one, two or more folds. Make your own origami animal then illustrate/ draw the mischievou­s adventures it gets up to!

‘Mischievou­s Mr Fox’ a craft workshop with Emily – August 10, 10.30am to 12 noon, 20 places for children aged three to eight years Get crafty and have fun with a focus on ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, making masks and designing a selfie ‘WANTED’ poster

Making a Robot workshop with Barry – August 31, 10.30am to 12noon, 20 places for children aged five and up, tickets cost £5; enquire for details - Barry shows you how to design and make mechanical robots that light up.You will use recycled materials and take a robot home, and make something extra to be part of the Honley Village Parade in November. Look out for some ideas which will be displayed in places like Honley People’s Park This is just a taste of Friends of Honley Library’s work for the local community, so don’t be shy, join the library today – you might make a new friend!
