Kate Beckinsale, actress, IN his resignation speech last week Boris Johnson could have attacked Theresa May, as Sir Geoffrey Howe did to Margaret Thatcher in 1989 over her White Paper for Brexit.

Instead, in my opinion, he displayed real dignity in imploring the PM to return to the vision of Brexit she gave in her Lancaster House speech. He added there is still time.

In my view there is still time for David Davis’ own paper, that he had painstakingly worked on for two years, to be resurrected, scrutinised and presented to the EU in place of the present White Paper.

This would be a true blueprint for our exit from the EU and fulfil the democratic will of the 52% majority in the Referendum result.

However, the likelihood of this happening at the moment looks remote. Therefore, one of two things will happen.

Either we leave the EU with no deal, which no-one wants as the economic effect on this country would be bad, but in Europe cataclysmic, especially for Ireland.

Or a deal is struck on the fudged White Paper which does not comply with the democratic will of the 52% majority in the Referendum and keeps us shackled, in part, to the EU.

In both scenarios, in my opinion, dissatisfaction and disillusionment will have set in with the electorate, paving the way for a communist-style, Corbynled government at the next General Election. That would be a catastrophe eclipsing a no-deal Brexit, a tragedy I would not want my children and grandchildren to endure. Council preventing builders’ rubble being left at councilowned tips.

Some enterprising members of the public have seemingly found a way of disposing of such waste without having to resort to flytipping though.

They are driving over to Elland and are using the Calderdale tip which accepts such rubbish there.

I know of two who have come from as far as Lepton and Netherton to do so.

Should Calderdale MBC be billing their Kirklees counterparts for the use of this facility I wonder? EVEN more irritating than the myriad temporary traffic lights we have to suffer daily is the recent outbreak of ‘Road Ahead Closed’ signs.

Has somebody bought a job lot and is determined to use them all at once?

The problem is they give no indication of where the road is closed and thus whether you can reach your destination before the closure.

Wilshaw Road leading to Netherthong has a road closure sign at its junction with Thick Hollins Road, together with a diversion sign which points you towards the bright blue yonder. Yet the road can still be used to access Wilshaw, Upperthong, Oldfield and Honley.

How many drivers have wasted time and fuel to get to these places by following the diversion?

Is it too much to ask for more detailed information such as ‘Road closed at...’ or ‘Road closed after...’ or will the needs of drivers continue to be dismissed with the customary contempt?
