“As a coach, I couldn’t be happier or more proud of the guys for what they’ve been able to achieve over the past two months,” said Woolford,43, who was appointed successor to Rick Stone at the end of April.

“As a club we have certainly come a long way and there has been a lot of hard work put in by the guys.

“To get the win over Castleford was a massive relief for everyone and I am glad we got the job done and didn’t have to come down to the last game.

“Relegation to the Championsh­ip would have consequenc­es financiall­y for everyone at the club, so not to have to go to the last game of the season to assure our place in Super League, you just can’t under-state the relief from everyone involved.

“Now, though, we want to finish the season well.

“We’ve got Wakefield at home, who are off the back of a big win against Hull, and we have spoken about refocusing and not letting ourselves down.

“We are at home, in front of our own crowd, and there are plenty of reasons to win.

“The lads have put in some good sessions this week and we will finish off with the captain’s run on Thursday.

“Once we get past Friday’s game we will reassess our goals for the Super 8s.”

So can the Giants make up that eight-point gap to the top four?
