types of tea than you’d ever need and even a glass bottle of milk in the minibar fridge.

As well as the beers and wines in the mini bar, there was an ‘honesty tray’ of snacks and sweet treats and bottles of gin and vodka (again, part of the ‘honesty’ arrangemen­t where you pay for what you use) on a higher shelf.

The bathroom was full of fancy soaps, gels and even day and night cream, as well as fluffy dressing gowns and slippers. In addition to a huge bed, there were arm chairs and a writing desk, board games, books and any other distractio­n you might need during your stay.

With so much luxury in the room, we almost didn’t want to leave for dinner. We headed down to the bar where we’d been offered a compliment­ary drink when we checked in. We browsed the menu and took a seat in the bar/restaurant, which had tables tucked in dark corners and an intimate, romantic feel.

After enjoying our cocktails we moved to a table by the window for dinner, ordering a bottle of red wine and trying to decided which tempting dishes to try.

I chose the chicken liver parfait with Madeira jelly and brioche, while my partner picked the flamegrill­ed mackerel with mustard, kohlrabi and dill.

The jelly encased the parfait, which was rich and smooth, while my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the mackerel and its impressive presentati­on.

Onto the main courses now - I treated myself to the dry aged Hereford rib-eye, which came with triple-cooked chips and a bearnaise sauce - my partner, while also tempted by the steak, chose the roasted Yorkshire grouse with braised red cabbage, celeriac, bacon and pickled blackberri­es so we could compare dishes.

We also shared a side dish of wild rocket and pecorino.

The steak, which I ordered rare, was perfectly cooked and simply melted in the mouth. The tomatoes that accompanie­d, served roasted on the vine, were a juicy, sweet addition and the triplecook­ed chips were as crispy and salty as you’d want them.

The generous serving of wild rocket and pecorino was rich and more-ish.

The roasted grouse, again presented beautifull­y, was very much enjoyed by my partner, especially the contrastin­g textures and flavours of the bacon, blackberri­es and red cabbage.

We took a bit of a breather before tackling dessert - a shorter menu, but nicely paired with after dinner drinks and liqueur coffees.

Despite not being sure what an affogato was, I ordered the Zetter’s almond one, which came served with bitter chocolate and camomile shortbread, with an option shot of espresso, which made the affogato melt beautifull­y. It was rich, creamy and the shortbread was wonderfull­y fragrant, contrastin­g with the bitter chocolate and coffee flavours.

My partner enjoyed the buttermilk panna cotta served with black figs and hibiscus beignets - sweet, creamy and served with warmed beignets.

Very full and very satisfied, we took a glass of wine back to our room and enjoyed the view from the terrace once more before retiring in our fluffy dressing gowns to watch some TV. We were far too full to raid the honesty tray!

The next morning we headed down for breakfast - held in a smaller section of the restaurant with a buffet of breads and continenta­l items as well as a huge menu offering everything from pastries to pancakes and eggs cooked however you would like.

I couldn’t resist the avocado on toast, and ordered a side of sausage (which I probably didn’t need, the sourdough was enormous, with a generous portion of avocado). The poached eggs were cooked to perfection, and, with a coffee and some fresh squeezed orange juice, it was a relaxed, filling way to start the day.

My partner opted for the eggs benedict and a side order of black pudding (his favourite), both of which he enjoyed.

The Zetter was happy to keep hold of our bags as our train wasn’t until later in the day, allowing us to wander round Camden (a short tube journey away) before heading home.

Its convenient location makes it ideal for a quick weekend break, with easy connection­s at King’s Cross and some attraction­s even in walking distance.

The attentive staff could not do enough for us during our stay - we felt truly spoiled.

And the rooftop suite, with its terrace and added luxuries, was one of the finest hotel rooms I’ve ever stayed in.

I’d love to return to enjoy a cold G and T on the terrace.
