WE’VE just had Huddersfield Carnival, which was a brilliant event as it paraded through Huddersfield town centre.

It was marred at the end by people not connected with the event who fired shots as the post-procession party got under way on Great Northern Street.

Luckily no-one was hurt and arrests have been made.

The organisers have vowed to be back next year so we thought we’d look back at the carnival in the past, when it was known as the Caribbean Carnival.

It also inspired youngsters at schools to get involved in the wonderful spirit of the event, so we have included some of them too.

This image shows children from Birkby Infant and Nursery School in their Caribbean costumes ready for the carnival.

Much of the Examiner’s photographic archive is now being stored at Heritage Quay, the archive service at the University of Huddersfield.

Copies of images in All Our Yesterdays can be bought online simply by putting into Google Huddersfield Examiner, buy a photo and it will take you straight to our site.

To find other photographs from the Examiner between 1948 and 1984, contact Heritage Quay to arrange to search the photographic diaries.
