F you want to get ahead, get a hat. It’s a familiar advertising slogan from the 1940s which well could apply to Slaithwaite milliner Ruth Farrell.

Ruth set up her business, Hope Bespoke Millinery, in a spare room at home.

And once her business started to take off she took the decision to rent a workshop and studio space at Globe Mills in Carr Lane, Slaithwaite.

Ruth designs and creates one-of-a-kind hats, fascinators, garlands, bouquets, button-holes and corsages and now – just 12 months on – she’s celebrating a prestigious award.

Ruth, who lives in Holme, won Best Fashion & Textiles Service in the 2018 Yorkshire & the Humber Enterprise Awards.

And now she’s also in talks with an agent in Eastern Europe to sell her work in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Ruth, who also works as a fashion consultant and fashion coach, said: “It has been an amazing year for Hope Bespoke.

“I am extremely proud of the recognition my work has received and love to see my customers looking gorgeous and proud wearing my hats.

“I will continue to grow Hope Bespoke as well as undertake the various coaching/design contracts. I aim to keep Britain’s manufacturing and design talent on the map.”

Moving forward Ruth also plans to launch a clothing line, Hope Blooms Atelier, to complement her hats.

CityFibre is delighted to get on board with the awards and in a statement a spokesman said: “Huddersfield’s Gigabit journey started in 2015, with 52km of CityFibre’s full fibre infrastructure initially utilised by the council and businesses alike.

“Now hundreds of premises are enjoying unlimited bandwidth at gigabit speeds, with local businesses saying it has ‘completely transformed the way they work.’

“This was just the beginning for Huddersfield’s digital landscape, as in April 2018, as part of a strategic partnership with Vodafone, CityFibre announced Huddersfield as one of the first areas in the UK to benefit from a fibre-to-the-premises roll out.

“With a £30m investment into the town, nearly every home and business will be within reach of transformational, gigabit speed broadband.

“With full fibre beneath its streets, Huddersfield’s entire digital landscape will be transformed – making the town more innovative, more productive and giving a digital boost to the local economy for decades to come.

“As this year’s Examiner Creative Impact Award sponsor, CityFibre aim to celebrate and recognise businesses making a positive impact on the region and its business community through creative services.”

The SimplyBiz Group, founded by Ken Davy, provides regulatory and business support to professionals operating within the financial services market and a spokesman said: “Since its inception back in 2002, we have grown year on year to become the largest in our sector.

“We ensure our members and clients are able to provide consumers with access to advice on a range of financial needs, from mortgages and protection, to investments, estate planning and taxation.

“We do this by providing guidance and support from a regulatory perspective and by providing access to business development support, such as technology solutions, marketing, events and more.

“Although we are very proud that our heritage and journey began in Huddersfield, and our main office is based there, we now operate from seven locations across the UK, employing over 400 dedicated professionals, now supporting over 10,000 members and clients throughout the UK.”

The closing date for entries has now passed and the winners will be announced at a glittering awards and celebratory evening on Thursday, November 1, at the John Smith’s Stadium.
