D Taylor ALMONDBURY Wesleyan have been promoted to the Drakes League Premiership for the first time in their history.
The Kaye Lane club – who joined the Drakes competition from the old Huddersfield Central League in 2013 – went up in style from the Jedi Sports Championship with a cracking winnertakes-all victory at home to Rastrick.
And there was a stunning finish to the promotion race in the Cedar Court Conference.
Denby took the title when beating Upperthong with just four balls to spare.
And Marsden won promotion alongside them when taking the last two wickets against Cumberworth in successive deliveries to earn a tie – Sajid Ali the bowling hero and Jack McNamara taking the final catch at second slip.
At Kaye Lane, skipper Will Binns scored 101 as Wesleyan totalled an impressive 294-4, with New Zealander Freddy Walker adding 74 not out and Tom Addy 79.
Wasim Javed was the best of the Rastrick bowlers with three for 66, but their batting was not allowed to fire.
Matt Henshaw made sure of that with six for 51 in 8.2 overs and Rastrick were sent back for just 124. Walker finished off with two for 24.
Barkisland took the Championship title by three points thanks to a sevenwicket win over Clayton West at Woodfield.
Spinner Matt Steers took five for 40 as Clayton West were held at 149-8 in a 20-over game.
Jamie Summerscales got Barkisland home with two balls to spare with a cracking 70 not out off 51 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.
In the Conference at Marsden, the home side were defending 172-7 in 40 overs, in which Imran Malik hit 53.
They had promotionchasing Cumberworth struggling at 33-4 at one point, but Reid Somani hit 34, Nico Gerogiou-Nicola 23 and Joe Senior 21, with Josh Kilner taking them to the verge of victory with the scores level.
But, in the penultimate over, Ali trapped James Haigh lbw and then had Chris Wilks caught by McNamara off the very next delivery to secure a tie and win his side promotion.
And he will start next season in the Championship on a hat trick!
