TUI is launching a new route from Manchester Airport to Rijeka in Croatia next summer.

The tour operator is introducing a direct weekly flight on a Thursday from Manchester to Rijeka, starting on May 23 next year, in response to a huge spike in interest from travellers.

The Croatian Tourist Board meanwhile, has seen almost an 8 per cent increase in UK travellers to the island this year, following a 26pc rise in arrivals the year before.

The country has been the filming location for a number of blockbuster films, most notably Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, which is thought to have added to its popularity with Brits.

It was also named as the most hashtagged destination on Instagram this summer and is expected to grow in popularity even more.

TUI holidaymakers will fly direct to Rijeka which is on the island of Krk with a ferry service to nearby Rab included in the price of the holiday.

The Island of Rab in Kvarner Bay boasts sandy beaches and seas, as well as homegrown exotic plants and a natural reserve.

The town is lined with paved cobbled streets and enchanting alleyways featuring romantic churches, tall towers and palaces.

It will be home to TUI’s adults only resort Sensimar Carolina, as well as two platinum hotels.

Those looking for a more diverse experience should opt for the country’s largest island of Krk. The island has something for everyone and can please the most cultural of tourists with its thousand years old towns, tiny rural villages and quiet cafes.

Mark Hall director of product at TUI UK, said: “We are excited to launch yet another interesting and different destination to our customers. We are the only tour operator flying from Manchester Airport to Rijeka, Croatia. This gives customers from the North West even more choice when deciding where to book their summer holidays next year.

“We are committed to offering holidaymakers the best travel experiences around the world and we know that Croatia is proving extremely popular with UK customers so we are positive this new addition to our portfolio will be a success.”
