A flavour of a day in the life at the magistrates’ court in town
We spent the day reporting live from Kirklees Magistrates’ Court with updates on ExaminerLive of all the criminal cases being heard. Our magistrates’ court reporter Emma Davison spent the day in court room number two to showcase a day in the life of the Huddersfield court ALL criminal cases in Huddersfield begin with a hearing at Kirklees Magistrates Court - serious offences must be sent to the crown court but a whole host of crimes can be dealt with at Huddersfield, including speeding, shoplifting and minor violent crimes.
Here is a taste of what they heard yesterday.
Kyle Johnson, 21, of Leeds, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking following a police pursuit in Heckmondwike on August 27. His case has been sent to Leeds Crown Court for sentencing.
Gareth Clavin, 33, of Cleveland Road in Marsh, pleaded guilty to harassing his former partner for several weeks between July 4 and August 14.
Prosecutor Natalie Chapman said that the couple were in a relationship but things turned sour when Clavin became controlling as she decided to pack up his belongings while he was in hospital.
Magistrates asked for a Probation report before sentencing Clavin and the court heard how he would be dealt with later that day.
A worker at Ings Grove House care home, which is based in Mirfield, appears accused of stealing from another member of staff.
Shaida Hussain, 63, of Millbrook Gardens in Dewsbury, pleaded not guilty to theft of a handbag from another member of staff.
William Frew, 50, of Westgate in Cleckheaton, faces two charges of assault by beating.
Frew denies the charges and his trial will take place at the Huddersfield court on December 5.
In the meantime he has bail conditions not to contact the two complainants.
Jonathan Oates, 31, of Railway Terrace in Bradford, to be sentenced for an assault on a former partner.
Oates sentenced to a community order with 50 hours of unpaid work.
