Council looks at
HUDDERSFIELD Town’s state-of-the-art redevelopment of its training complex at PPG Canalside has gone before planning chiefs.
And the seven-member panel at Kirklees Council looked favourably on the club’s preapplication for its £20m redevelopment, which was described as “a significant contribution” to the Leeds Road site.
“Let’s hope it happens,” said Clr Steve Hall, chairman of the authority’s strategic planning committee, which was previewing the plans before formal submission.
And in a reference to Town’s recent form, he added: “Let’s have some bloody results!”
Unveiled to fans, supporters and members of the public earlier this month, the provisional plans outline a major enhancement to the PPG Canalside footprint.
Club chief executive Julian Winter said the multi-million pound upgrade would turn Canalside into “an elite sports environment.”
A report to the committee said the new three-storey training building “would make a significant contribution both aesthetically and functionally to the existing training complex.
“The proposals build upon the recent success of Huddersfield Town FC.”
It added that the club’s continued progress in the Premier League “has resulted in an increased demand on the site’s facilities.”
The club’s proposal involves demolishing the existing main building at PPG Canalside.
A three-storey replacement would house a media/press suite, gymnasium with performance lab, first team changing rooms, water and cold plunge pools, steam room, sauna, whole body cryotherapy facility, conditioning pool, meeting rooms, dining rooms, lecture space and offices.
The centrepiece of the new build would be a corner pillar made of sandstone loosely resembling the 19th century Victoria Tower located on Castle Hill.
