ARSDEN Jazz Festival returns this weekend with over 10,000 people set to descend on the Huddersfield village.

Now in its 27th year, the festival attracts local and international artists to cover three days over the second weekend in October.

This year will be bigger and better than ever with 800 jazz musicians booked to perform 250 of which will be young musicians from around the globe.

Barney Stevenson, artistic director of the festival, said: “We try to be ahead of the curve and help define current taste, rather than follow it.

“Several times we have had our choices vindicated by our artists being nominated for Mercury Prize and MOBO awards such as Kit Downes, Roller Trio and Dinosaur, in the same year as they have played at Marsden.

“The beauty of programming a large festival like Marsden is that we are able to reflect such a broad range of jazz and improvised music, from old-school New Orleans-style trad jazz to out-there, free improve and related music such as blues, western swing and soul, which, along with our family friendly events, attracts an increasingly diverse audience.” the festival. The moving sculpture, ‘The Hurly Burly,’ is back and will be joined by several street bands, including Peace Artistes and BLAST Furness, The Incredible Plastic Street Band and The Marsden Mob - featuring local children playing homemade musical instruments. This is not to be missed. Full Price: £1 per duck (tickets available throughout the festival) When: Sunday, October 14, at 4pm Where: Union Bridge, Church Lane, Marsden (HD7 6BN)

The last act of the festival is always a big event.

This year, Orphy Robinson’s septet will be celebrating the music of vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson in the Mechanics Hall.

The prolific composer assembled a band to pay tribute to he work of Bobby Hutcherson, shortly after the American jazz legend died in 2016.
