Council must get tough in the wake of kingdom deal

KIRKLEES Council is being urged to take a tough stance on littering when its contract with litter enforcer Kingdom comes to an end.

Green councillor Andrew Cooper told the Examiner that he would like to see the council take a “strong line” on littering in the aftermath of the Kingdom trial.

The councillor, whose ward covers the town centre, said he expected Kirklees Council to work harder to get the message across that residents should take responsibility for their own rubbish.

Clr Cooper was speaking out after it was revealed that 58 litter bugs were fined by Kirklees magistrates in a single day last month for dropping cigarettes.

The 58 people were ordered to handed over a staggering £19,481 in fines and charges.

“The council says it can tackle this in-house and has learnt from the Kingdom trial,” said Clr Cooper.

“I’d like the see the council continue to take a strong line on littering. We’ve got to get the message across that they are responsible for properly disposing of their rubbish.”

Last month it was revealed that Kirklees had decided to get rid of Kingdom. It followed complaints from the public about over-zealous Kingdom operatives.

The authority said it would employ its own in-house staff from the end of this month. It is not clear whether the council will seek to maintain a similar tally of prosecutions which Kingdom achieved.
