‘Intrigue’ as new bar postpones opening night

-

HUDDERSFIELD’S newest bar “played the ultimate trick” on customers by postponing its opening night – just hours before doors were due to open.

The owner of Sketch, on New Street in Huddersfield town centre, posted on Facebook at 9am on Friday to announce the launch date had been a Halloween trick.

The cocktail bar and club, which is located at the former premises of the old Shoehorn bar, had been due to open for the first time at 8pm later that day.

A post on the bar’s Facebook page read: “TRICK ......... Happy Halloween Huddersfield!!! The Official Opening For Sketch is on Friday 23rd November 2018.”

This was accompanied by a poster which read “trick or treat” with the “trick” crossed out.

It added: “No tricks next time... only treats.”

Customers were left baffled and many failed to see the funny side. Sketch’s owner said individual customers with concerns had been contacted directly.

In a statement, he explained: “Huddersfield’s newest cocktail bar and club, Sketch, have played the ultimate Halloween trick or treat on the town.

“After months of restoration of the Victorian building on New Street, we announced the opening date as Friday 26th October.

“But when the whole of Huddersfield thought they were in for a treat, we added to the mystery we pride ourselves on being a hidden gem - by announcing the date was just a Halloween trick.”

The idea behind Sketch is to create the ambiance of a late night drinking den in the style of a prohibition-era secret underground club.

The owner added: “Sketch will have a retro, industrial era style with the vibe of a party that’s not supposed to be happening.

“The marketing has been

The sign put up on the New Street entrance of new bar Sketch, announcing the October 26 opening, above, the earlier sign, above right and the Facebook post, right done to complement this atmosphere. This is not a bar that advertises its offers or plasters its logo everywhere. The naked website only adds to the intrigue.”
