HUDDERSFIELD YMCA claimed the local bragging rights as they secured a 39-21 win at local rivals West Leeds in North One East.

The YM dominated the first 20 minutes, and Gavin Stead was unlucky when his first penalty attempt bounced off the post back into play, but he was on target moments later when another Leeds infringement saw him given a second chance which he gladly accepted.

Further pressure followed and from a scrum close out, the YM pack had the home side on the rack, to a point where they dropped the scrummage as they were being shunted back, leaving the referee little choice but to award a penalty try and automatic conversion.

Further points followed after a well-worked ball saw Samuel Fletcher come into the line and sidestep the defence to sprint in for a score and put the visitors 15-0 ahead.

Leeds rallied and second row Tom Jackson crashed over the line for a try which was converted by scrum-half Breakwell, and they closed the gap further when forward George Carpenter forced his way over the line from close range, with Breakwell’s conversion making it 15-14. But Sam Hodge squeezed in at the right corner for the YM after a nice passage of play involving forwards and backs to give the YM a 20-14 half-time lead.

After the break the sheer power of YM tight-head prop Stu Dyke was enough to smash a hole in the Leeds defence and his try stretched the lead to 13. Leeds’ efforts were thwarted by a good YM defence and with the occasional break out looking dangerous, it wasn’t a surprise when the YM added to their score.

A super passage of play involving forwards and backs created a gap for Fletcher to work his magic.

He jinked inside and outside and the Leeds defence couldn’t lay a finger on him as he danced through for another YM score. Stead was once again on target to put the game all over bar the shouting.

The visitors relaxed and let Leeds have a final tilt, resulting in another score for Carpenter, which was once again converted by Breakwell to make it 34-21.

But the YM had the last say when a brilliant break from well inside their own half saw Stead in open space, he took on the defence before handing the ball to Andrade who in turn flipped the ball up out of the tackle into the hands of the supporting Burnet for an excellent final unconverted score in the corner.
