Drink-driving student nurse to lose uni place

-

There breath tests showed that she had 104 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – three times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Lambert admitted that she’d drunk between one-and-a-half to two bottles of the wine and could have killed somebody.

Her solicitor Mohammed Younis explained that before 2010 she was addicted to alcohol and lost her home and her job.

Then she referred herself to a detox clinic and was medicated for alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

As she learned how to cope without it and changed her lifestyle she became a mentor with the Basement Recovery Project in Halifax.

In 2016 Lambert joined Locala assisting people suffering from substance misuse and this year began the university nursing course.

Mr Younis said: “She has dealt with her substance misuse and made great strides since with some major changes in her life.

“On October 13 she was at home and suffered a relapse and drank the wine over a short period of time.

“Foolishly she got behind the wheel, a decision she regrets and this is a sobering moment for her as the consequences are far-reaching.

“If she gets banned for more than 12 months she will lose her job and not be able to go into nursing.

“It is stated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council that anyone with a conviction in excess of 12 months will not be admitted as a nurse.

“She will have to leave the course she’s on and has been told that by her tutors.”

Magistrates were told that since the incident Lambert, of Kiln Avenue in Mirfield, has referred herself to Alcoholics Anonymous and the Basement Project again.

She pleaded guilty to driving while over the prescribed limit but magistrates said that due to the very high reading they had to stick to their guidelines and ban her from driving for 24 months.

Lambert must also complete 60 hours of unpaid work as part of a community order and pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge.
