A NUMBER of Filedoc Huddersfield Table Tennis League committee members and players attended the official opening of the town’s new table tennis centre last weekend.

League sponsor Godfrey Gabriel of Filedoc Ltd and British Senior league team sponsor Gail Beckford of Gail’s Travel Shop were also at the opening.

Andrea Holt, who represented Great Britain at two Olympic games, was also present on behalf of Table Tennis England.

Illness prevented the mayor from performing the official opening, but the mayor’s consort, Ken Lowe, deputised in her absence.

A lot of time and effort went in to getting the centre up and running in readiness for this season.

The open weekend for the general public also proved to be a success based on the number of people attending over the two days.

Current results in Division Two of the Filedoc Huddersfield Table Tennis League indicate the division will be very competitive this season as only six sets separate the top four teams – Paddock, Kingsmith Engineering C, Marsh Con C and Deighton D.

In their latest round of matches Kingsmith Engineering C and Marsh Con C both had 7-3 wins against Woodfield Park B and Kingsmith PW respectively.

In Division One, Wilshaw A will have their work cut out to make it four titles in a row as early-season form indicates a strong challenge will come from the two leading Deighton teams.

Kingsmith Engineering A have won their opening three matches but have yet to play the aforementioned challengers.

U3A A maintained their 100 per cent record in Division Three with a narrow 6-4 win against Scissett. This week they face their toughest test to date as they travel to the only other team in the division with a 100 per cent record – New North Road Baptist Church A.

Deighton Junior player Sarah Amin has received a call up for the Yorkshire Girls table tennis squad. She is yet another junior player to prosper from the Deighton coaching set-up, now based at the new table tennis centre.
