Wagner was not surprised at the fans’ reaction, however, as he now expects the Town faithful to create that atmosphere each week.

He said: “They absolutely delivered, but I never had a shadow of a doubt that this would be the case.

“I’m so happy that they have had something to really cheer - not only a performanc­e like in the past, or a draw like in the past or a clean sheet, but this one they could really cheer a goal and three points as well.

“This is so important for the whole football club that we have this winning feeling back and that we know it is possible to win games and that we know it is possible to deliver in big-pressure games.

“This will help us for the whole season because we have seen last season there will be a few of these games over a season. Where you have to be there, where you have to deliver and we have shown, like last season, this group of guys have the character to deliver in these situations. “This is so important for them. “Now we take this win and these happy faces which we have here and now in our football club and whole town and go on.” Wagner was celebratin­g three years in charge of Town on Monday and also racked up his 50th win as boss with victory over the Londoners.
