The Terriers have not achieved consecutive top-flight wins since February, but looked set to end that record after Alex Pritchard fired them in front.

But David Wagner’s side could not hold on to the lead and eventually had to settle for a point after Felipe Anderson’s equaliser 16 minutes from time.

The head coach stuck with the same side that earned Town’s first victory of the season over Fulham on Monday for the visit of the Hammers.

Jonas Lossl started in goal, with Christopher Schindler, Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen and Terence Kongolo retaining their spots in defence.

The midfield triumvirate of Aaron Mooy, Philip Billing and Jonathan Hogg continued in the heart of the pitch, while Chris Lowe and Florent Hadergjonaj offered the width for the Terriers.

Steve Mounie was preferred to Laurent Depoitre to lead the line, with the Benin international being supported by creative midfielder Pritchard.

Erik Durm returned from a minor groin injury in time for the fixture, but had to settle for a place on the bench.

The match started at an incredibly high tempo, with Town striker Mounie getting the first chance within five minutes.

The 24-year-old forward met a Mooy corner in the box, thundering a header towards goal.

Lukasz Fabianski somehow made an excellent reaction stop from the effort to tip it on to the bar and out, but he could not keep Town from going ahead minutes later after Lossl had pulled off a top save of his own to deny Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic.

It was Pritchard who put Town ahead, becoming the first Huddersfield man to score at the ground since Tom Ince’s last-minute winner against Watford last April – 210 days earlier.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man played a neat one-two with Hogg outside the area before finding himself in space 20 yards out.

His left-footed effort wasn’t the cleanest strike witnessed in this corner of West Yorkshire, but had enough fizz on it to beat Fabianski and nestle neatly in the bottom corner.

It would have been just Town’s luck for Pritchard’s strike to come back off the frame of the goal, having hit the woodwork eight times previously in the league this season, but it didn’t take long for another effort to be denied by the upright, with Billing striking the far post with an overhit cross.

The ball bobbled along the line before hitting the opposite post and spinning clear, summing up Town’s fortunes 12 games into the season.

Huddersfield continued to cause problems for the visitors throughout the first half and should have doubled the lead on the half-hour.

Issa Diop received a pass from his keeper and looked to play forward, handing the ball straight to Town man Hadergjonaj.

The Swiss international played in Mounie for a one-on-one with Fabianski, but the keeper stood firm, denying last season’s top scorer at his near
