Bairstow has to wait for recall

-

YORKSHIRE’S Jonny Bairstow was set to be left out of the England side for the second Test against Sri Lanka, which started in the early hours of this morning.

The wicketkeeper missed the first Test win in Galle with an ankle injury sustained during the one-day series.

And although he is back to full fitness, he has been left on the sidelines, with Ben Foakes keeping the gloves.

Ben Stokes will bat at No.3 in an unchanged England side. Jos Buttler was pencilled in to bat ther in the first Test if England had bowled first and Moeen Ali was fatigued.

Stokes came in at five in both innings and has played 64 of his 85 Test knocks from No.6. Bayliss, though, believes he has a technique well suited to a more prominent position.

The decision to leave out Bairstow may have been even harder given his efforts as the country’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman over the past three years. ‘Windermere One Way,’ an 11-mile open water swimming event.

He completed the race in four hours 18 minutes.

Bottomley came other three races Championships.

Susan Teale took Kirklees’ tally to five bronze medals after coming third in the 50m and 100m fly.

It was her first Masters National Championship and Susan swam personal best times in each of her swims, setting two new BOK records.

She has had a fantastic first year, winning medals at the county and regional competitions as well.

Beatrix Langara and Caroline Marsh were the final two swimmers for Kirklees.

They both finished just outside of the medals but produced fantastic swims, setting new personal best times in most of their races.

It is understood he was available for selection after working hard to bounce back from ankle ligament damage, but Foakes’ stunning debut as stand-in blocked Bairstow’s route back.

Bairstow’s disappointment will doubtless be acute. He will surely get his chance again sooner rather than later, maybe even in Colombo in the third Test, but having defied initial estimates to recover in time, he would have been desperate to play. Skipper Joe Root said: “The one thing that is really pleasing is how quickly he’s got to this stage.”
